Walnut Creek watershed is a small watershed with an area of about 5,130
hectares. It is located southwest of Ames, Iowa, in the heart of
the corn belt. This watershed is characterized by fairly level topography
and rich soils that developed under prairie and prairie pothole wetlands.
More than 80% of this watershed is planted to corn and soybean row crops. |
 |
Buck Creek Watershed is located south of Grinnell, Iowa. This
watershed is about 8190 hectares in area, and is characterized by more
topographic relief than Walnut Creek. This watershed also differs
from Walnut Creek in having more land enrolled in the CRP program (16%
of the watershed in 1994), in pasture and in hay. In addition, the
Buck Creek watershed has more forest cover than the Walnut Creek watershed. |
